Have you ever had the thought that you’re capable of achieving so much more if you could just get past this invisible barrier?
Hooray!
We’re in the same sucky boat.
It’s incredibly frustrating to know you deserve more. You put in all your effort, but then…where the heck are the results?
When you don’t see the results you’re hoping for, it boils down to two main reasons: you’re not doing enough, or you’re simply overwhelmed.
If you’re not doing anything, at least you get the luxury of sleeping at odd hours, scrolling through your news feed, binge-watching Avatar for the billionth time, or hanging out with friends.
Being overwhelmed is infinitely more disappointing.
But when you skip all those pleasures to push yourself hard and still don’t see results, it’s maddening. You want to scream at the sky, “What the hell? Why am I not getting what I want? I wanna watch Avatar too!”
I have multiple ideas, multiple projects, and I’m constantly learning. But despite having dozens of great ideas that I could easily execute, I still feel like I'm stuck in a hamster wheel—a giant, thoroughly depressing hamster wheel whose only job is to make me feel as miserable as possible.
"Where am I going wrong?"
After months of frustration, a friend enlightened me with a simple truth:
I was doing too much at the same time.
A young farmer inherited a large, overgrown field. Eager to turn it into a productive farm, he planted seeds for every type of crop—corn, wheat, tomatoes, carrots—without any plan. He ran from one end of the field to the other, trying to care for every plant, but nothing grew well.
An experienced farmer saw this and advised, "Focus on one crop at a time." The young farmer followed the advice, dedicating all his efforts into growing corn. It quickly flourished. Then he moved on to the tomatoes, and so on. Soon, his field became productive, one crop at a time.
Sometimes even the most simple facts hide in plain sight. Every time I wake up and start taking massive action, I get overwhelmed.
Common Mistakes We Make:
Focusing on Too Many Things at Once: Spreading your attention thin across various tasks can dilute your effectiveness.
Starting a Second Projects Before Finishing the First: This leads to unfinished tasks piling up.
Getting Lost in Information and Activities: Information overload can cause you to never make any actions.
Poor Planning: Without a clear plan, it’s easy to lose track of priorities.
Not Tracking Time: If you give yourself unlimited time on projects, you might find yourself stuck in a whirlpool of procrastination.
Fear of Failure: This can subconsciously hold you back from taking decisive actions, and may stop you from continuing anything as soon as you reach an obstacle.
The Solution:
I realized that was my mistake. I don’t have to finish everything. I just need to focus on one task at a time. Here’s what worked for me and might work for you too:
Make a List: Write down everything you need to do but hate doing. The moment you hear that voice saying, “do it later,” decide to do it immediately.
Prioritize Tasks: Start with the tasks you don’t want to do.
Take Ownership: Avoid excuses and take responsibility for your actions. Your dog didn't really eat all your important notes.
Stay Focused: Concentrate on one task at a time without letting other tasks distract you.
