What is Shakshuka?


Shakshuka is a simple one-pan dish made of gently poached eggs in a delicious chunky tomato sauce. Said to have originated in Tunisia, this breakfast recipe is popular in many parts of North Africa and the Middle East.


It is a perfect recipe for breakfast, brunch, or lunch. The soft eggs with the creamy luscious tomato sauce and mildly spiced with cumin, coriander, paprika, and red pepper flakes. You can exclude the red peppers if you can't tolerate the heat.

Shakshuka

Ingredients-

  • 3 to 4 whole eggs

  • 2 cups tomato puree

  • 1 cup chopped tomatoes

  • 1 tbsp tomato paste or sauce

  • 1 tsp cumin powder

  • 1 tsp coriander powder

  • 1 tsp paprika

  • 1 tsp red pepper flakes

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • 1/2 tsp crushed black pepper

  • Salt to taste

  • Parsley for garnish


Procedure-

  1. Heat the olive oil in a pan, to this add the fresh tomato puree, and let it cook over medium heat until the tomatoes are mushy.

  2. It's time to add all the ground spices, red pepper flakes and tomato paste. Let it cook for another 4 to 5 minutes. Add salt as per taste.

  3. Scoop little holes in the tomato mixture with the back of the spoon. Crack one egg in each of the holes.

  4. Cover and cook for 2 minutes till the eggs are of a semi-runny consistency.

  5. Finish it with freshly ground black pepper and chopped parsley. Your easy and delicious Shakshuka is ready to be served. Enjoy!



Tips & tricks-


  • The original recipe doesn't include garlic, but you can include garlic to enhance the flavor.

  • Red pepper flakes are optional.

  • Tomato paste is not used in the authentic version, though it does adds to the acidity as well as the sweetness of the dish.

  • The consistency of the eggs can be kept as per one's preference.

  • It tastes best with pita bread and garlic bread.

  • You can also add meats such as chicken or lamb to the dish as per your preference.

  • You can have it for breakfast with bread and add a salad for lunch. It's perfect for any time of the day.
